The Orion Domed coin is the third and last design in popular Southern Sky series by the Royal Australian Mint. This series which featured constellations visible in the night sky of the Southern Hemisphere also features a domed shape, something not often seen. In Greek mythology Orion was known as the "great hunter" and was said to have once boasted he could kill "any creature of the Earth". He was said to be so large that his shadow was cast over the entire underworld. It is fitting that he should be so large as his position on the celestial equator make his constellation visible from anywhere in the world. This ancient hunter is represented by some of the brightest stars in the night sky.
The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and the words "Elizabeth II Australia 2014 5 Dollars" and the artist's initials.
The reverse features a brilliantly coloured night sky with pink and orange reminiscent of a beautiful Australian sunset. The stars that make up the Orion constellation are different sizes to evoke the varying intensity of the stars that make up the constellation. The outer edge is inscribed with the words "Southern Sky" and "Orion" and the Right Ascension and Declination of the constellation. The domed shape of the coins helps give the section with the constellation the appearance of being in the sky.
