Product details

To celebrate the 2022 Lunar New Year of the Tiger, the Perth Mint has released a new collection of coins and investment items.

COIN HIGHLIGHTS

  • Ships individually in a protective plastic sleeve
  • Consisting of 2 oz of 9999 Fine Silver
  • Reverse: Features a depiction of a tiger and its cub in a bamboo forest beside a river stream and finished with the Perth's mint exclusive "antiquing" techniques
  • Obverse: Features an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, her name, the year of release, country’s name, legal tender value of the coin along with the metal type, weight and purity

These limited 2 oz silver coins feature the engraving of an adult tiger and its cub in a bamboo forest. The bamboo is a very symbolic tree in Chinese culture, they represent honor, quality, and humbleness. The tigers in the coin are depicted beside a river stream on rugged rocky terrain and are looking straight as if they are facing someone. The silver coin has an antique finish which grants it a look similar to that of an ancient artifact.

The Lunar New Year is an important date that is celebrated by communities worldwide.

The legend says that the Chinese emperor Jade held a Great Race with animals. The race would determine the first twelve zodiac signs. The first twelve animals to cross a river before the end of the race would be featured in the Zodiac.

The Tiger was one of the favorites to win the race, but the powerful river stream kept sending the big cat in another direction. That did not discourage the confident Tiger, which kept swimming and made it ashore after the Rat and the Ox. The Tiger is the third animal of the Chinese zodiac.

It is said that people born in the Year or the Tiger are determined, brave, and well-liked.

ABOUT PERTH MINT

The Perth Mint opened in 1899 as the British Royal Mint’s 3rd branch in Australia. The historical Hay Street location handled gold refining until moving to a modern facility in April 1990. Ownership of the mint was transferred to the Government of Western Australia in July of 1970. Under an agreement with the Commonwealth Treasury, they were empowered to mint and market gold, silver, and platinum as Australian legal tender to investors and collectors worldwide. Today, they are amongst the elite world mints whose pure gold, silver, and platinum items are trusted without question. Items such as the Australian Nugget, Silver Coin Series (Kangaroo, Kookaburra, Koala, and Platypus to name a few), as well as the Australian Lunar Gold and Silver Coin Series are extensively sought after by bullion investors worldwide.
