Rarity by the roll: Your exclusive opportunity to own 2023-dated 50-cent non-circulation coins.

One of Canada’s most elusive denomination is rarer than ever in 2023. As we focus our attention on commemorating the reign of Queen Elizabeth II (1952-2022), the Mint will not be issuing any 2023-dated Canadian circulation coins featuring both the traditional reverse designs and an obverse featuring Queen Elizabeth II. But for those seeking to complete their year-by-year 50-cent collection, we’ve struck a limited number of non-circulation 50-cent coins—an exclusive collector’s edition that is not intended for circulation. Each Collector’s Edition Non-Circulation 50-Cent Special Wrap Roll gives you 25 of these 2023-dated non-circulation 50-cent coins, which come in a commemorative paper wrap marked by a touch of royal purple.

One of the few ways to get 2023-dated 50-cent coins outside of a set.

Special features

  • Rarer than ever. Canada’s elusive 50-cent coin is already hard to find, and this Special Wrap Roll is one of the few ways to acquire a 2023-dated one outside of a set. An exceptional issue, it is exclusively available as part of the Collector’s Edition Non-Circulation Coin Set, and the Special Wrap Roll featured here.
  • 25 coins in one roll. Inside each roll, your 25 coins are all 2023-dated 50-cent non-circulation coins that share the same heraldry-themed design as the ones struck in years past.
  • Always a favourite. The 50-cent coin’s limited annual mintage and timeless heraldic design have made it a collector favourite.

Packaging

Your coins are wrapped in a special illustrated paper with a royal purple-coloured edge that pays tribute to the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

As we focus our attention on commemorating the reign of Queen Elizabeth II (1952-2022), the Mint will not be issuing any 2023-dated Canadian circulation coins featuring both the traditional reverse designs and an obverse featuring Queen Elizabeth II. Instead, Royal Canadian Mint are offering a collector’s edition of these annual issues that have been struck in limited numbers. These are non-circulation coins, meaning they are legal tender but not intended for general circulation. The obverse also bears a special marking that includes four pearls symbolizing the four effigies that have graced Canadian coins and the double date of her reign.

Transition obverse

The obverse is double-dated (“1952-2022”) to commemorate the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. It is also marked by four pearls symbolizing the four effigies that have graced Canadian coins during that time.

Royal purple wrap

Your 25 coins are grouped together in a commemorative paper wrap that features a touch of royal purple.

DID YOU KNOW?

The 50-cent coin’s classic Arms of Canada design was last updated 25 years ago. Canada’s Coat of Arms was modified in 1994 to include the motto of the Order of Canada, Desiderantes Meliorem Patriam (Latin for “they desire a better country”); the motto was also added to the 50-cent coin’s version of the Arms, and the first pieces to include this new addition were struck in 1997.

Your 2023-dated 50-cent non-circulation coins feature Canada's Coat of Arms, which was adopted by proclamation of King George V in 1921 and first appeared on the 50-cent piece in 1937. Each coin's obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. The obverse also bears a special marking that includes four pearls symbolizing the four effigies that have graced Canadian coins and the double date of her reign.
