In 1962, Canada’s centuries-long history with the sea became formalized as a federal organization: the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG). Within a few years, the icebreaker CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent was launched to assume a critical role in the navigation, research, communications and support of mariners in Canadian waters.

The Ottawa Branch of the Royal Mint opened in 1908 and was renamed The Royal Canadian Mint in 1931 when control was transferred to the Canadian government.
