Elephants are the largest existing land animals and have roamed the Earth for thousands of years, sharing a collective memory and attracting the fascination of multiple cultures and societies, symbolizing wisdom and intelligence. There are three recognized living species of elephants: the African forest elephant, the African bush elephant (featured in this coin) and the Asian elephant.

The reverse design depicts a right profile relief of a majestic African bush elephant feeding from a tree branch under the sunlight in its natural forested environment.

The obverse side of these coins features the intricate Somali coat of arms, which depicts two leopards standing on spears holding a crowned shield with a centred single star against horizontal lines.
