The Grand Canyon was first protected by President Roosevelt in 1906, although it was not designated a national park until 1919.

The Colorado River carved the canyon out of Northern Arizona over millions of years and is thought to expose almost 2 billion years of Earth's geological history.

The canyon is 277 miles long, 18 miles wide at it's widest point and up to 6000 feet deep at it's deepest point. As one of the world's most popular tourist attractions, the canyon sees as many as five million visitors a year.
