Celebrate Elsie MacGill, who believed we are all capable of reaching for the sky.
Elizabeth “Elsie” MacGill (1905-1980) was a person of brilliant mind and unconquerable spirit who excelled in aeronautical engineering and elevated others by championing women’s rights. Twice featured (with and without colour) in this Commemorative Collector Keepsake Card, the 2023 $1 commemorative circulation coin celebrates this exceptional Canadian once dubbed the “Queen of the Hurricanes,” whose accomplishments—as well as her exemplary desire to improve and uplift others—were driven by her unrelenting belief that we can all soar higher.
One Keepsake Card gives you two $1 Honouring Elsie MacGill coins: one with colour and one without.

COIN HIGHLIGHTS
- Make the inspirational story of Elsie MacGill part of your collection. The 2023 $1 Honouring Elsie MacGill coin honours an extraordinary Canadian whose life and achievements are among the most exceptional and noteworthy Canadian stories of the 20th century.
- Features the transitional effigy. The 2023 Honouring Elsie MacGill coin is one of the few 2023-dated circulation coins to feature the transitional effigy and be destined for general circulation.
- Exceptionally rare for 2023. Each Keepsake Card also gives you 2023-dated versions of Canada’s classic $2, $1, 25¢, 10¢, 5¢ coins — a rarity in a year when these are only available as non-circulation coins (legal tender but not intended for general circulation).

- Collect, keep and share. With 50,000 available and priced at just $24.95, this Keepsake Card is a great addition to any collection. It’s also an affordable introductory piece that makes it easy to share your interest in the theme, or in coin-collecting, with others.
TWO $1 COINS IN ONE KEEPSAKE CARD
Each Keepsake Card includes both versions of the 2023 $1 Honouring Elsie MacGill commemorative circulation coin: one with colour and one without (engraved only). Dubbed “Queen of the Hurricanes,” MacGill oversaw the engineering work on Hawker Hurricanes produced in Canada during the Second World War, and that aircraft is highlighted on the colourized coin.
CELEBRATRORY PACKAGING
Your coins are packaged together in a colourful folder that allows for easy viewing of the coins and a timeline of key events in the life of Elsie MacGill.
DID YOU KNOW?
A 1942 issue of True Comics dubbed her “Queen of the Hurricanes.” As Chief Aeronautical Engineer, Elsie MacGill supervised the engineering work for the Canadian production of more than 1,450 Hawker Hurricanes for the Allied war effort – she even designed a winterized version.
Already Canada’s first practising professional woman engineer, Elsie MacGill became the first woman in North America – and possibly the world – to earn a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering. That same year (1929), she contracted polio and was told she would never walk again, but she defied expectations by learning to walk with the support of canes.
ABOUT THE $1 COIN
Designed by artist Claire Watson, the $1 coin’s reverse features a portrait of Elsie MacGill (1905-1980), an aeronautical pathbreaker and champion of women’s rights, indicated by the lapel pin she wears representing her tenures as provincial (Ontario) and national presidents of the Canadian Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs. The sky backdrop highlights some of MacGill’s historic engineering achievements, including the Maple Leaf Trainer II (top) – the first aircraft to be produced and designed by a woman – and her key role in the wartime production of Hawker Hurricanes, which is highlighted on the colourized coin. The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. The obverse also bears a special marking that includes four pearls symbolizing the four effigies that have graced Canadian coins and the double date of her reign.
